Why wax quality decides your setting machine's real output
The most common cause of disappointing setting output is not the setting machine. It is what happens two stages earlier, at the wax injector.

Here is a conversation we have had more times than any other. A customer installs a setting machine rated at 18,000–20,000 diamonds per hour. Three weeks later they call to say the machine is not performing — rejects are high, output is nowhere near the rating, and they suspect the machine.
We ask one question: can we see your wax?
What ±0.02 mm actually means
Every automatic setting machine in our range is specified at ±0.02 mm spot drilling accuracy, delivered by an industrial-grade five-axis motion controller, high-end servo drives and high-precision screw guide transmission.
That number describes the machine's repeatability relative to the position it is told to go to. It does not, and cannot, describe whether that position is correct on the piece in front of it. If the wax has shifted, shrunk unevenly or warped in handling, the machine will place the stone with beautiful precision in the wrong place.
Precision machinery does not fix upstream variation. It reproduces it faithfully, thousands of times an hour.
The four ways wax defeats a setting machine
1. Inconsistent injection temperature
Wax injected too hot shrinks more as it cools, and shrinks unevenly across sections of differing thickness. Injected too cold, it does not fill fine detail and you get short shots. Either way, piece-to-piece dimensions vary — and the machine is programmed for one geometry, not a distribution of them.
2. Uneven cooling
A piece pulled from the mould before it has stabilised will continue to move after it leaves. Thick sections cool slower than thin ones, and the differential pulls the geometry out of true. By the time it reaches the setting station, the seat positions the programme expects have drifted.
3. Handling distortion
Wax is soft. Stacking trays, gripping too firmly, or leaving pieces near a heat source will all deform them. This is the cheapest fault to fix and the most often overlooked, because nobody thinks of "carrying a tray" as a process step.
4. Trapped air and incomplete fill
Without vacuum assistance, air trapped in the mould leaves voids and incomplete sections — which is exactly why a vacuum pump sits alongside the wax injector at stage three of our factory workflow. A void where a stone should seat is not something the setting machine can compensate for.
Stage three governs stage four
Our catalogue lists stage three — wax injection — as requiring a wax injector, wax, vacuum pump, spru wax mould and shoulder iron. Stage four then lists the diamond wax setting machine, compressor, air dryer and tray setting.
That ordering is not decorative. Each stage-three item exists to remove a variable that would otherwise reappear as a stage-four reject:

The compressed air problem that looks like a wax problem
One more variable belongs here because it is misdiagnosed so often. Setting machines need 80 psi (0.4 MPa) working air pressure on the Mini Pro and ST-3D 1000, and 90 psi (0.6 MPa) on the ST-HDSSM.
Two failure modes to check before blaming the wax:
- Pressure sag under duty cycle. A compressor that reaches the pressure but cannot sustain it produces intermittent faults that come and go with the workload — which looks exactly like batch-to-batch wax variation.
- Moisture in the line. This is why an air dryer is listed alongside the compressor and is not optional. Wet air degrades pick-up consistency and shortens nozzle life.
A diagnostic sequence
If output is below expectation, work through this in order before calling anyone:
- Measure ten consecutive wax pieces from the same mould. If they vary measurably between themselves, the problem is upstream. Stop here and fix stage three.
- Check air pressure at the machine under load — not at the compressor, and not at idle.
- Check for moisture at the air outlet.
- Check tray setting — is the piece genuinely held still, or can it shift under the nozzle?
- Then, and only then, look at the machine. If steps one to four are clean and output is still short, call us — that is a real fault and we will treat it as one.
What this means if you are still deciding what to buy
If your wax is currently inconsistent and you are choosing between a wax injector and a setting machine, buy the injector first. An automatic setting machine amplifies whatever quality reaches it. Feed it good wax and you get high-volume good output. Feed it variable wax and you get high-volume rejects, faster than you could previously produce them.

Why is my diamond setting machine producing rejects?
In most cases the machine is placing stones accurately into wax that is not accurate. A setting machine holds ±0.02 mm spot drilling accuracy, but that tolerance is measured against the wax it is given. Inconsistent injection temperature, uneven cooling, distortion during handling or wax that has aged will all move the target. Check stage three before suspecting stage four.
What wax quality does an automatic setting machine need?
Consistency matters more than any single grade. The wax needs to be dimensionally stable, fully filled without short shots or flash, cooled evenly so it has not warped, and handled so it is not distorted between injection and setting. A vacuum wax injector with controlled temperature is what makes that repeatable.
Should I buy a wax injector before a setting machine?
If your wax is currently inconsistent, yes. An automatic setting machine amplifies whatever quality reaches it — good wax becomes high-volume good output, and variable wax becomes high-volume rejects. Getting stage three under control first protects the return on the much larger stage four investment.
